Wolfsburg Castle

Wolfsburg Castle is a ruin perched on a rocky crag high above the Speyerbach river near Neustadt an der Weinstraße. The site rises roughly 130 meters (426 feet) above the river and commands views across the surrounding valleys.

Construction of the fortress began around 1120 and continued over centuries, positioned strategically to control the river valley. The castle served as a seat of power for several generations and was eventually abandoned.

The site served as a center of regional power and continues to shape the character of the area today. Its ruins reflect how control over the valley was maintained and remain part of the local identity.

Access is via an old walking path that climbs from below and requires some effort. Wear sturdy shoes and allow time both for the climb and to explore the ruins at your own pace.

On the path toward the castle, traces of early Roman settlements can be found, showing that the area was inhabited long before medieval times. These archaeological hints connect the site's history across multiple periods.
