Mayener Grubenfeld, Historical basalt mine in Mayen, Germany
The Mayener Grubenfeld extends over 100 hectares, featuring exposed basalt walls and old mining equipment scattered throughout the former quarry landscape.
The Romans established systematic mining operations around 55 BC, employing 600 workers to extract high-quality basalt for manufacturing millstones.
The site includes the SteinZeiten exhibition, where visitors learn about stone working traditions and experience the physical demands of historical mining methods.
A 1.2-kilometer circular trail guides visitors through the mining area, with detailed information panels explaining the different mining periods and geological formations.
The underground tunnel system serves as Germany's largest bat sanctuary, hosting between 30,000 and 100,000 bats from across Central Europe during late summer.
