Kloster Helgoland, Franciscan monastery in Mayen, Germany
Kloster Helgoland is a Franciscan convent in Mayen, Rhineland-Palatinate, with several buildings spread across a large property near the town center. The complex includes spaces for religious services and formerly provided accommodation for guests attending prayer gatherings.
The Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Family founded the monastery in 1922 after relocating from Belgium, with its consecration taking place in September 1923. The community shaped life at this location for more than eighty years.
The monastery served as a gathering place for prayer meetings and quiet reflection days organized by the local Kolping Association of the Diocese of Trier. People came here to pray together and spend time in contemplation.
The site is accessible by streetcar in Mayen and located conveniently close to the town's historic center. Since the convent ceased its regular operations in 2010, visits require advance arrangement with local authorities or tourism services.
The monastery takes its name from a former restaurant called Helgoland that operated on the property before the sisters acquired it. This unusual origin of the name reflects how the site's purpose transformed over time.
