Löwenburg and Philippsburg, Castle ruins in Monreal, Germany
Two neighboring medieval castles, Löwenburg and Philippsburg, stand atop a 350-meter mountain spur above the Elzbach valley in Monreal.
First mentioned in 1229, Count Hermann III von Virneburg constructed Löwenburg on his brother Philipp's territory, leading to a dispute resolved through legal agreements.
The structures demonstrate medieval defensive architecture with Löwenburg featuring a 25-meter high keep and Philippsburg earning the name Rech due to its smaller size.
The ruins remain accessible throughout the year, with both castles situated along hiking paths that begin near Untertorstraße and opposite Pfarrkirche Heiligste Dreifaltigkeit.
French troops destroyed both castles during the War of the Palatine Succession in 1689, leading to their current status as preserved ruins under state protection.
