Thingstätte Braunschweig is an open-air theatre in ruins on Nussberg hill, with stone terraces arranged in amphitheater form. The site originally seated about 15,000 spectators and today is marked by surviving structures and a former observation bunker that now offers views across the Brunswick landscape.
The site was built in 1935 as part of a nationwide program to establish open-air theaters for political gatherings and performances. Later, in the 1940s, tunnel systems were constructed beneath Nussberg, reflecting the changing use of the location over time.
The name Thingstätte comes from an ancient word for gathering place, and the site was built as a stage for shared community experiences. Visitors can still see today the tiered seating areas that show how people gathered here to watch performances together.
The site is easy to access with good orientation since the amphitheater structure is clearly visible. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes, as the ground is uneven and the steps between terraces can be challenging to navigate.
Hidden tunnel passages from the 1940s run beneath the grounds, connecting different sections of the site and remain largely unseen today. These underground structures reveal a less-known aspect of the location's past.
