Burg Daun

Burg Daun is a medieval castle ruin perched on a hillside above the town of Daun in the Eifel mountains. The remaining structures include portions of defensive walls, towers, and fortifications that still command views across the landscape.

The fortress was founded in the 12th century to control trade routes crossing the Eifel region. Over time it was repeatedly damaged and rebuilt before eventually being abandoned and falling into ruin.

The castle once housed the local rulers who controlled the town and surrounding lands below. Today it demonstrates how central such fortifications were to managing the region and its people.

Marked hiking paths lead uphill from Daun's town center to the castle ruins. The walk is fairly short and straightforward, though there is little shade once you reach the hilltop site.

From the hilltop, clear views stretch across the volcanic landscape of the Eifel, where crater lakes dot the terrain in the distance. These natural water bodies offer a stunning contrast to the stone ruins.
