Leineaue zwischen Ruthe und Koldingen, Nature reserve in Laatzen, Pattensen, and Sarstedt, Germany.
Leineaue zwischen Ruthe und Koldingen is a protected area along the Leine River in the region between Laatzen, Pattensen, and Sarstedt, stretching across extensive meadows, wetlands, and woodland patches. The river and its floodplain form the backbone of this varied landscape, extending for several kilometers.
The area was formally designated as a nature reserve in 2001 and incorporated the older protected site of Kiesteich Ruther Marsch. This consolidation created a connected space for protecting the river landscape and its inhabitants.
The area is used by locals for quiet observation and nature study, with traditional meadow management keeping the open landscapes intact. This gentle approach to the land allows visitors to experience the rhythms of nature directly.
Multiple trails lead through the area and provide access to different landscape types, with some paths specifically designed to minimize disturbance to wildlife. It is advisable to visit in early morning or late afternoon hours when most animals are active.
The area hosts more than 240 different bird species, making it a hotspot for birdwatchers, while also providing critical habitats for beavers, bats, and amphibians. This diversity arises from the interplay between river dynamics, waterlogged soils, and aging forest patches.
