Sahrawi refugee camps, Refugee camp in Tindouf Province, Algeria.
Five settlements across Tindouf Province house over 173,000 Sahrawi refugees in an area characterized by extreme desert conditions and limited resources.
The camps were established in 1975 when Sahrawi people fled their territories after Morocco took control of Western Sahara following Spain's withdrawal.
The four main settlements, known as wilayas, carry names of Western Sahara cities: Laayoune, Smara, Dakhla, and Auserd, maintaining connection to their homeland.
Residents depend entirely on international humanitarian assistance for food, water, and basic necessities, with water being delivered through a complex trucking system.
The camps function as a state-like structure with administrative institutions, despite being located in one of the most remote desert regions of Algeria.
