Tietgenkollegiet, Student residence in Ørestad, Denmark
Tietgenkollegiet is a circular, seven-story student dormitory in the Ørestad district of Copenhagen, Denmark. Its 360 rooms are arranged around an open central courtyard and divided into five vertical sections.
The building was completed in 2006, commissioned by the Nordea Danmark Fonden and designed by the architects Lundgaard & Tranberg. Its circular form was inspired by the traditional round communal dwellings of the Hakka people in southern China.
Residents are organized into groups of 12 who share a kitchen and a common living area, which shapes the rhythm of daily life in the building. This setup brings students from different backgrounds into regular contact with one another.
The dormitory is easy to reach by metro from central Copenhagen, as Ørestad has a direct metro station nearby. The ground floor spaces, which include a cafe, an auditorium, music rooms, and study areas, can be visited without entering the private residential floors.
About one in ten rooms is set aside for international exchange students, giving the building a markedly international character. The ground floor also includes workshops and bicycle storage, which are part of everyday life for residents and reflect the cycling culture of Copenhagen.
