Havneparken, Waterfront park in Islands Brygge, Denmark
Havneparken is a waterfront park stretching across 3.8 hectares along Copenhagen's harbor, with old railway tracks and industrial features woven into the green landscape design. The space includes five swimming pools, skateboarding areas, sports courts, children's zones, plus a cultural center and restaurant serving visitors.
This former dockland area was abandoned when shipping moved away in the 1970s, leaving behind industrial remains and unused waterfront. Community members started reclaiming the neglected space, eventually resulting in the park opening to the public in 1984.
The area holds meaning as a gathering place where locals and visitors come together throughout the year for swimming, sports, and outdoor meals. Its transformation from working harbor to community space shows how a neighborhood can reinvent itself while honoring its roots.
The park sits right on the water with clear zones for different activities, making it simple to navigate once you arrive. Summer days and good weather bring crowds, so visiting early in the day or on cooler days offers a more relaxed experience.
An old railway car on the grounds functions as a small exhibition space telling stories from the area's working past. This repurposed object brings the industrial heritage to life and connects visitors to the people who once worked here.
