Gemini Residence, Residential building in Islands Brygge, Denmark.
Gemini Residence is a residential building in Islands Brygge with 84 apartments attached to the exterior of two cylindrical concrete silos and featuring glass walls plus wide balconies facing the harbor. The eight-story structure connects the preserved silo towers with modern homes and uses central atriums covered with plastic membranes to bring natural light deep inside.
The building grew from three silos of Sojakagefabrikken, a soybean processing plant that operated until the 1990s before closing. The conversion into apartments happened in 2005, saving the historic concrete structures from demolition.
The building shows how Copenhagen's industrial areas have been transformed into homes while following modern Danish ideas about function and sustainability. This change shapes the harbor district today and attracts people who want to live where history and urban life mix together.
The apartments range from 90 to 200 square meters and are reached through two circular staircases within the preserved concrete structure. Keep in mind this is a private residential complex, but the unusual design and harbor views are clearly visible from outside.
The apartments are mounted on the outside of the original silos rather than built inside in the traditional way, creating a rare construction approach. This unusual placement lets residents live directly attached to the silo walls with unobstructed views.
