Åmosen

Åmosen is a large wetland covering roughly 8,000 hectares in western Zealand that connects several lakes and stretches from Hvalsø toward the Great Belt. The landscape includes marshy areas, open water, and vegetated shores that change appearance with the seasons.

The area contains archaeological traces of human settlements and farming that stretch back centuries into Danish history. These findings show that people have long interacted with and shaped this landscape.

Local farmers manage the land through traditional grazing methods that shape how the wetland looks and functions today. These practices show how people actively participate in caring for the natural environment.

The area is accessible through marked hiking trails open from sunrise to sunset, with Fugledegård center providing information and orientation. Visitors should prepare for wet conditions and wear appropriate footwear.

The wetland functions as a migration route for traveling birds and supports rare plants adapted to Danish fen conditions that exist in few other locations. These specialized species make the area particularly valuable for observing nature's seasonal movements.
