Qara Oasis, Desert village in Matruh Governorate, Egypt.
Qara Oasis is a small village in Matruh Governorate, northwestern Egypt, set on a rocky plateau at the edge of the Qattara Depression. The settlement has natural springs and is topped by the ruins of an old fortress that still defines the skyline of the village.
The settlement grew around a fortress built on a rocky hill to control and protect access to the oasis. Over the centuries, the village developed around this fortified core, which still stands as a ruin above the houses.
Residents of Qara prepare Al-Aqrouz, a traditional dish made from palm products that is offered to guests as a sign of hospitality. The palm tree shapes daily life here, from the food people eat to the look of the village itself.
The roads leading to Qara can be in poor condition, especially after rain, so checking the route before setting out is a good idea. Visitors should bring their own water, food, and supplies, as there is little infrastructure on site.
The natural springs at Qara carry a high salt content, yet the water is still used to irrigate the fields around the village. This makes farming possible in one of the driest corners of Egypt.
