Valley of the Golden Mummies

The Valley of the Golden Mummies is an ancient burial ground from the Greco-Roman period located in Bahariya Oasis. It covers a vast area and contains thousands of individual tombs and burial chambers of varying designs.

The site became known to the modern world in 1996 when excavations began after an accidental discovery. Subsequent digs revealed this was a major burial center used over several centuries during the Greco-Roman era.

The necropolis reflects burial practices that show how social rank determined the type of tomb and care given to the deceased. Visitors can observe these differences as they walk among the graves, from simple to more elaborate preparations.

The site is partly exposed to the sun with limited shade, so bring sun protection and water for the visit. Much of the necropolis remains unexcavated, so respect boundaries and follow the marked paths through the grounds.

Many burials have retained their original painted details and decorated masks that show remarkable preservation. Grave goods found at the site include jewelry and ancient coins that tell stories about the people buried there.
