Valley of the Golden Mummies

The Valley of the Golden Mummies extends across three square kilometers, containing thousands of preserved mummies from the Greco-Roman period.

In 1996, the archaeological site emerged when a guard's donkey accidentally revealed a tomb containing mummies adorned with golden masks.

The necropolis contains four types of mummies reflecting social status: gilded, cartonnage-covered, pottery coffin encased, and linen-wrapped specimens.

The excavation site remains largely unexplored, with only 250 mummies discovered from an estimated collection of over 10,000 specimens.

Many mummies retain original features including painted eyes, decorated masks, and artifacts such as silver jewelry, copper bracelets, and Ptolemaic coins.
