Speos Artemidos, Ancient rock temple at Minya Governorate, Egypt
Speos Artemidos is a rock-cut temple carved into the eastern cliffs of the Nile in Minya Governorate, consisting of several chambers cut into the mountain. The structure combines temple areas with adjacent tombs located within the same rock face.
The temple was commissioned during the 18th Dynasty under Hatshepsut and originally included a long inscription criticizing earlier Hyksos rulers. The site was later used and modified by subsequent dynasties.
The temple displays reliefs and inscriptions showing ceremonies and religious rituals dedicated to the goddess Pakhet. Visitors can still see details of the wall carvings that reflect the spiritual life of ancient Egyptians.
The site sits on a raised plateau and requires time to explore the various chambers and tombs spread across different levels. It is best visited early in the day when sunlight illuminates the carved details more clearly.
Some of the tombs within the complex bear Coptic inscriptions from the time after Alexander the Great, showing the site remained in use across many centuries. These later layers tell a story of religious continuity at this sacred location.
