Wadi Elrayan

Wadi Elrayan is a protected nature reserve with two artificial lakes linked by waterfalls set in desert terrain. The two water bodies differ in size and depth, with the cascades creating a distinctive landscape feature in this flat region.

The area was established as a protected zone and later recognized as a Ramsar site to preserve its water bodies and resident species. This designation confirmed its international importance as habitat for water birds and migratory species.

Fishing is central to daily life here, shaping how communities use the lakes and connect with the water. Traditional methods passed down through generations remain important to both local livelihoods and food production.

The best way to visit is by car, as this is a large open area where walking long distances becomes difficult. Plan your visit during cooler months when heat is manageable and wildlife viewing is most rewarding.

Sulfur springs emerge on the southern side of the lower lake, giving the water a chemical composition suited to specialized life forms. These natural mineral sources contribute to the variety of ecosystems that have developed in this area.
