Pyramid of Hawara, Ancient pyramid complex in Hawara, Egypt.

The Pyramid of Hawara is a royal burial complex in the Faiyum region built from limestone and mud brick during the Middle Kingdom. The structure rises 58 meters with a base of 105 meters, angled at 30 degrees, and originally served as the tomb of a powerful ruler.

Pharaoh Amenemhat III built this pyramid during the 12th Dynasty around 1850 BCE after abandoning an earlier tomb project at Dahshur. The shift in location reveals how rulers of that time made decisions about where to establish their final resting places.

The site carries the name of Pharaoh Amenemhat III and reflects how rulers of his time sought to secure their place in the afterlife through monumental building. Walking through the remains reveals the beliefs that shaped this society and the resources they devoted to royal burials.

The site is located near the town of Hawara in the Faiyum region and can be reached on foot or by vehicle depending on your starting point. Bring sun protection and arrive early in the day when temperatures are more manageable.

The burial chamber holds a single quartzite monolith weighing approximately 110 tons, surrounded by multiple hidden trapdoors designed to deter grave robbers. This construction reveals the lengths ancient builders went to protect the pharaoh's final resting place.
