Lake Qarun Protected Area

Lake Qarun Protected Area spans 1385 square kilometers of wetlands, geological formations, and archaeological sites along the northwestern edges of Wadi Rayan.

The protected area contains fossil remains dating back 10 million years, including the oldest known primate specimens and petrified trees discovered in this region.

Archaeological sites around Lake Qarun feature temples and structures from Pharaonic and Roman periods, including the Temple of Goldsmith and Qasr Qarun.

Visitors can access the reserve through local tour operators who provide guided excursions for birdwatching, fossil observation, and archaeological site exploration.

The reserve protects indigenous fish species such as green tilapia and white shrimp in waters that maintain salinity levels between 32-35 grams per liter.
