Pyramid of Senusret II

The Pyramid of Senusret II is a burial monument featuring a mudbrick core surrounded by a protective trench filled with sand to prevent water damage. This construction method protected the interior from moisture while defending against structural deterioration over time.

This burial monument was built during Egypt's Middle Kingdom period and reflects developments in tomb construction of that era. Archaeological work in the 1890s uncovered its hidden structure and revealed the sophisticated systems designed to protect the burial chamber.

The unconventional southern entrance represents a shift in how ancient Egyptian builders approached pyramid design. This departure from the traditional northern orientation shows how architects adapted their methods to better protect burial sites.

The structure stands about 48 meters high and welcomes visitors after comprehensive restoration work completed in the 2010s. Early morning visits offer the best experience, with cooler temperatures and fewer crowds making it easier to walk around and observe the details.

The monument hides its entrance beneath a princess's tomb, a trick meant to confuse tomb raiders. Inside, a false burial chamber was built with considerable effort to mask the location of the actual burial site.
