White Desert, National park in New Valley Governorate, Egypt

The White Desert is a national park in New Valley Governorate, Egypt, where wind erosion has transformed pale limestone blocks into various shapes. Some of these formations rise several meters high from the sandy ground and cast long shadows across the flat surroundings during the day.

This region of the Sahara received protected status in the year 2002 to preserve its geological features from unregulated access. The limestone deposits date back to a period when the area was covered by a shallow sea.

Bedouin groups from nearby settlements use ancient routes through the limestone formations and prepare tea over open fires during multi-day crossings. Their knowledge of the desert allows travelers to experience the silence and vastness of this remote area in the company of experienced guides.

Access requires organized tours departing from Bahariya Oasis, usually between October and May when the heat becomes more tolerable. Bringing sufficient water supplies and sun protection is necessary, as there are no facilities within the park.

The limestone surface reflects moonlight in an unusual way and makes the ground shimmer slightly after sunset. This effect only becomes noticeable during clear skies and a full moon.

Geological formations: rock structures, caves, thermal springs

This collection presents geological formations created through natural processes over millions of years. From layered sandstone waves in Arizona to volcanic basalt columns in Northern Ireland, these locations demonstrate Earth's geological diversity. Erosion, tectonic activity, and mineral deposits have shaped landscapes that provide insights into our planet's history. The selection includes limestone caves in New Zealand with glowworms, thermal springs in Turkey with travertine terraces, and colored rock formations in China created by iron-rich minerals. Visitors will find glacier caves in Iceland, canyons in Utah, and salt pans in Namibia. Each location documents specific geological processes and offers opportunities to explore different rock formations and natural phenomena.

Geological formations: canyons, caves, rock formations

This collection presents geological formations created through millions of years of natural processes. From the striped sandstone walls of Antelope Canyon in Arizona to the basaltic columns of the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland and the calcium terraces of Pamukkale in Turkey, these sites demonstrate the work of wind, water, tectonic forces and volcanic activity. The collection includes diverse geological phenomena across all continents. The Tsingy de Bemaraha in Madagascar consists of sharp limestone pinnacles, while the Moeraki Boulders in New Zealand are large spherical concretions on the beach. The Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia forms the world's largest salt flat, and Ha Long Bay in Vietnam displays thousands of karst islands rising from the sea. Many of these formations are accessible to visitors and offer insights into geological processes. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in China inspired landscapes in popular films, while the Grand Prismatic Spring in Wyoming derives its colors from thermophilic bacteria. From the Chocolate Hills in the Philippines to the volcanic Jeju Island in South Korea, this collection documents the diversity of Earth's history.
