Fraser Tombs

Fraser Tombs is an ancient necropolis with rock-cut burial chambers extending over several kilometers near Tihna el-Gebel village. The site displays carved hieroglyphics and statues from different periods of ancient Egypt, providing a window into how officials and their families were buried.

The tombs were built during Egypt's Fifth Dynasty and were discovered in 1853 by Heinrich Brugsch. George Willoughby Fraser later documented them during his nineteenth-century research in Upper Egypt, giving the site its modern name.

The tombs belonged to officials who served as priests of Hathor, showing how closely religious and administrative power were connected in this place. Visitors can observe how these roles shaped the region's identity during ancient times.

The tombs lie about ten kilometers northeast of Al Minya and require transportation with a police escort to visit. Plan ahead and be prepared for conditions at this remote location.

The tomb of Ny-ka-Ankh contains a written document confirming the transfer of his authority to his oldest son. This rare record reveals how inheritance and succession were officially documented in ancient times.
