Amphitheatre of Italica, Roman amphitheater in Santiponce, Spain
The amphitheater features an oval layout with dimensions of 156 by 134 meters and three levels of seating areas for 25,000 spectators.
Emperor Hadrian ordered the construction of this amphitheater between 117 and 138 CE as part of the expansion of the Roman colony of Italica.
The arena included dedicated spaces for gladiator battles, animal hunts, and religious ceremonies with shrines to deities Nemesis and Dea Caelestis.
The structure contains two main entrances: the eastern triumphal gate for performers and the western gate, known as libitinaria, for removing fallen participants.
Engineers designed an underground drainage system to manage water flow from a nearby stream, maintaining the stability of this fourth largest Roman amphitheater.
