Cruz de Hierro, León, Monumental cross in León Province, Spain
Cruz de Hierro is a monumental cross located at about 1520 meters elevation with a wooden shaft topped by an iron cross mounted on a stone foundation. The structure sits between Foncebadón and Manjarín, marking the highest point where the French Way passes through León Province.
The monument has stood at this location since the 14th century, serving as an essential waypoint for medieval pilgrims traveling toward Santiago de Compostela. Over time, it became a focal point on multiple pilgrimage routes where generations of walkers established their traditions.
The site holds deep meaning for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, who leave stones as a way to symbolize letting go of worries and struggles during their spiritual walk. This simple gesture creates a shared experience among travelers from different backgrounds and faiths.
The site is reached on foot along a marked trail between two villages, with clear signage and directional markers for visitors. The exposed location at high elevation means weather can change quickly, so appropriate clothing for varying conditions is advisable.
The original iron cross is preserved in the Museum of the Ways in Astorga, while a replica continues the centuries-old practice of collecting visitor stones at the site. This separation allows both historical safekeeping and the living tradition to coexist.
