Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, Soria

The Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad is a Gothic church building standing outside the medieval city walls near Cervantes Alameda, featuring pointed-arch vaults throughout its interior. The structure is topped by an 18th-century bell tower that stands distinctly apart from the earlier sections.

Construction began in 1552 under the Vera Cruz Brotherhood, who built the sanctuary for their devotional practices and gatherings. The Counts of Gomara later expanded and enhanced the building during the same century, helping shape its current appearance.

Inside stands a 16th-century statue of the Virgin shown with a sorrowful expression and traditional robes that visitors find deeply moving. The figure draws people to quiet prayer and reflection throughout the year.

Access is through twin gates from Plaza Mariano Granados, with well-maintained paths winding between mature trees that lead to the building. Comfortable shoes are advisable since the route passes through garden areas with natural pathways.

During Holy Week, the Virgin statue is carried in a special procession without the typical Christ figure, symbolically representing her sorrow in isolation. This unusual celebration is rare in the region and makes the sanctuary a notable place for distinctive religious observances.
