Castle of Batres, Medieval castle in Batres, Spain.
The Castle of Batres is a fortified residence from the 15th and 16th centuries in the village of Batres, in the Community of Madrid, built with four corner towers, thick brick walls, and a central courtyard with stone columns. The structure combines Gothic defensive features with Renaissance details visible on the façade and in the courtyard.
The castle was built in the 15th century by the noble Laso de la Vega family and expanded in the following century with Renaissance additions. The poet Garcilaso de la Vega was among its most notable residents, spending part of his life there.
The main entrance portal displays the coats of arms of the Laso de la Vega and Guzmán families carved directly into the stone. These heraldic details are among the first things a visitor notices when approaching the building.
The castle now houses a school of gardening and landscaping, so not all areas are freely open to visitors at all times. Checking ahead before arriving is a good idea, as access to certain parts of the site may depend on whether courses or workshops are in session.
The courtyard features a double gallery supported by columns in the Toledan style, a type of construction rarely found outside the Toledo area. The 16th-century iron railings that line these galleries have survived without being replaced or significantly altered.
