Castell de Cabrera, Medieval fortress in Maçanet de Cabrenys, Spain.
Castell de Cabrera is a castle ruin on a granite rock at about 852 meters elevation in the Catalan mountain region. The remaining walls and a preserved water cistern indicate the former structure of this fortress.
The fortress was first recorded in 1003 and was part of the defense network of the County of Besalú. In the 13th century it experienced multiple French military occupations.
The castle displays Romanesque building techniques that reflect medieval border fortifications of the county. Visitors can see the craftsmanship of that era in the standing walls.
The castle ruins are reached via a forest trail from Can Barris farm heading toward Collado de Lli pass. The path suits hikers and vehicles with good ground clearance.
The fortress sits on a cone-shaped rock that rises like a natural watchtower above the valley. From this elevated position the garrison could monitor the vast landscape of the surrounding regions.
