Roc del Pou

Roc del Pou is a mountain summit in the eastern Pyrenees that marks the border between France and Spain. Trails from both countries lead to the top, with the French GR10 hiking path offering clear markings and regular rest areas along the way.

The mountain has served as the natural boundary between France and Spain since the Treaty of the Pyrenees fixed the current border in 1659. This long history of marking the frontier has shaped how people on both sides relate to and use the land.

Shepherds from both sides of the border have grazed flocks on these slopes for centuries, shaping the landscape through their daily work. This shared use of the mountain reflects how local communities historically moved freely across what is now a political boundary.

You can reach the summit from either side, but the French approach has better trail markings and facilities. Bring proper hiking boots and weatherproof clothing, as mountain conditions can change quickly.

The mountain has three different names reflecting the languages of the region: Roc du Puits de la Neige in French, Roc del Pou in Catalan, and Têton des Salines in local dialect. These varied names reveal how the mountain belongs to multiple cultural worlds at once.
