Pic de les Salines, Mountain summit in Eastern Pyrenees, France and Spain
Pic de les Salines is a mountain summit in the Eastern Pyrenees that marks the natural border between France and Spain. The peak sits at roughly 1,330 feet (1,333 meters) and divides the French and Spanish sides of this mountain region.
The mountain was a key point along trade routes between the two countries during medieval and early modern times. Salt merchants regularly crossed this ridge, making it strategically important for regional commerce.
The name reflects the regional salt trade that shaped both sides of the border. French and Spanish versions of the name show the linguistic diversity found in this frontier area.
Marked hiking paths lead to the summit from Céret on the French side and from Maçanet de Cabrenys on the Spanish side. A mountain refuge sits about a half-mile (550 meters) to the southwest of the peak and serves as an orientation point and resting spot.
Hikers can reach the summit from two different countries and switch between French and Spanish territory in a short time. This border location makes it a rare place where you can literally stand with one foot in each country.
