The Virgen de la Asunción sanctuary features a combination of 9th-century presbytery and 18th-century architectural elements in its main structure.
The sanctuary originated as Santa María de Carrea before the 11th century, preceding the construction of the nearby San Pedro Collegiate Church.
The sanctuary houses a Romanesque-Byzantine statue of the Virgin, seated with the Child on her left knee and wearing a copper bowl with geometric patterns.
Located 70 kilometers from Asturias Airport, the sanctuary provides public parking and connects to the Bear Trail hiking route for nature exploration.
The sanctuary's stained glass windows incorporate French leading techniques used in major cathedrals, donated by the Marist Brothers religious order.
