Las Ubiñas-La Mesa, Natural park and biosphere reserve in Asturias, Spain.
Las Ubiñas-La Mesa is a protected reserve in central Asturias featuring mountain peaks around 2,400 meters high. Deep valleys filled with beech forests and mountain meadows form the landscape throughout the park.
Two ancient Roman roads called Via Carisa and Camino Real de la Mesa once crossed this territory to connect with the León plateau. These paths show how important the region was for trade and movement between areas.
Shepherds have shaped these highlands for centuries through grazing practices that keep meadows open and accessible. You can still see traditional stone huts and stone walls scattered across the slopes, traces of how people have worked the land.
The park offers various hiking trails ranging from easy to challenging for different fitness levels. Come prepared for changing weather conditions and bring sturdy equipment for mountain walks.
The park contains Cueva Huerta, which is the largest cave system you can explore in all of Asturias. The Val de Sampedro river has carved dramatic gorges through the rock that reveal layers of geological history.
