Castell de Besalú

The Castell de Besalú is a medieval castle standing on a hill above the town and overlooking the Fluvià river. The ruins display thick stone walls and a defensive position that underscores the importance of the place in past times.

The castle arose during the Middle Ages when Besalú was an independent county within the Spanish March. It played a central role in securing the region and gained its current form through several rebuilding phases over the centuries.
