Casa Barco, Teruel

Casa Barco is a three-story residential building located at the intersection of San Fernando Street and Ronda de Liberacion, distinguished by its clean lines and minimal ornamentation. The structure uses concrete as its primary material and maintains its original residential function.

Engineer Juan Jose Gomez-Cordobes designed and built the house in 1934 during a period of architectural innovation in Spanish residential construction. Two decades later, the building took on strategic importance during military conflict in the city.

The building shows how rationalist design principles were applied in Teruel, moving away from traditional brick construction toward modern concrete methods. This approach was innovative for the region and helped shape how the city developed architecturally.

The building sits at Calle de San Fernando 24 and is clearly visible from the street, though it remains a private residential space. Visitors can appreciate its architecture from the outside while respecting the privacy of those living inside.

During military conflict, the house served as a strategic observation post with artillery positions positioned on its roofs and sides. Inside, a shortwave radio station called Radio Teruel operated, enabling communication throughout the besieged city.
