African Union Conference Center and Office Complex, building in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The African Union Conference Center and Office Complex is the main headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, serving as a center for international conferences and diplomatic gatherings. The building reaches nearly 100 meters high and comprises multiple structures with large conference halls, smaller committee rooms, and special facilities for high-ranking guests.
The building's construction began in 2009 and was completed in 2012, aimed at providing a new permanent home for the African Union headquarters. The site previously housed a prison called Alem Bekagn that was used for detention during various political periods in Ethiopia's history.
The building's design features two hands holding each other, symbolizing friendship and cooperation between Africa and China. Inside, traditional African art pieces are mixed with symbols representing unity across the continent.
The complex is easily accessible from different parts of Addis Ababa by taxi or bus. Interior spaces are well-lit and organized with clear pathways to help visitors navigate to various areas and facilities.
The building's height of nearly 100 meters was intentionally set at 99.9 meters to symbolize the founding date of the African Union on September 9, 1999. Some members of the community wished that the historical site of the former Alem Bekagn prison had been marked with a memorial or plaque.
