Puerta de Trujillo

Puerta de Trujillo is a structure combining religious and defensive features located on Plasencia's southern side. It features double stone stairways leading to the chapel and an arched passage beneath, which serve both as circulation and structural elements.

Construction took place between 1721 and 1723 on the foundations of medieval structures. It served travelers as the main gateway to the city from the south and was the primary crossing for those coming over the Jerte River.

The site holds significance for locals through religious processions and prayers that take place here, particularly during annual celebrations. Visitors can sense this community role by observing how the space continues to serve as a gathering point for spiritual observances.

The gate sits in an easily accessible location in the southern part of the old town, where foot traffic and vehicles can pass through. Access is most straightforward from Trujillo Street or via Trujillo Bridge, which crosses the Jerte River.

The facade is decorated with Tuscan pilasters that give the entrance a classical character, while inside a decorated dome emphasizes the spiritual purpose. This blend of architectural styles shows how the structure joined its original role as a gate with religious functions.
