Velasco's Tower

Velasco's Tower is a medieval fortified structure in Espinosa de los Monteros with a square floor plan and thick stone walls. The building displays typical defensive elements from the medieval period, including robust construction designed to withstand attacks.

The structure came under the ownership of Juan de Velasco in the early 15th century when he acquired it in a partially ruined state. This acquisition marked a significant moment in the building's history within the Burgos region.

The tower received protection status along with other Spanish castles through a decree signed by Francisco Franco on April 22, 1949.

The tower is in a fragile condition and listed on Spain's Red List of Endangered Cultural Heritage sites. Visitors should be aware of potential safety concerns and exercise caution when approaching the structure.

The structure received official protection recognition when it was already heavily deteriorated and had long since lost its original military function. This makes it an example of preserving history even in the most challenging circumstances.
