Collados del Asón Natural Park

Collados del Asón is a protected park in Cantabria covering roughly 4,740 hectares of limestone mountains with beech and Cantabrian oak forests. The terrain includes various hiking routes that range in difficulty, connecting meadows and forested areas across the protected space.

The park's landscape was shaped by glacial activity during the Quaternary Period, creating notable features like the Circo de Hondojón. These ancient geological processes left behind the distinctive terrain visible throughout the area today.

The remote setting has kept traditional shepherd ways alive among its few residents. This long-standing lifestyle shapes how the land looks, with open grasslands used for grazing and scattered simple settlements.

An interpretation center provides information about conditions and available trails of varying difficulty. It helps to check weather conditions beforehand, as the elevated terrain can experience rapid changes throughout the day.

The limestone terrain contains an extensive network of karst formations created by water erosion over time. These underground cave systems and sinkholes make the geology here distinctly different from surrounding regions.
