Caverne du Dragon, Military museum in Oulches-la-Vallée-Foulon, France.
The Caverne du Dragon is a former limestone quarry containing multiple underground chambers and tunnels carved beneath the surface. The site houses military artifacts and displays related to the First World War period.
The quarry was alternately controlled by German and French forces between 1915 and 1918 during the Battle of Chemin des Dames. The changing occupation by both sides left traces of military activity throughout the chambers.
The chambers display personal belongings and weapons from French and German soldiers who occupied this space during the war. These objects offer visitors insight into how soldiers from different sides lived and what mattered to them daily.
Visitors can book guided tours available in several languages with special programs for school groups and researchers. The site is entirely underground, and temperatures remain consistently cool throughout the year.
The underground chambers maintain a constant temperature of about 12 degrees Celsius throughout the year. German inscriptions carved into the limestone walls by occupying troops remain visible as historical marks.
