Kew Railway Bridge, Railway girder bridge in Kew, England
Kew Railway Bridge is a railway span across the River Thames connecting Kew with Strand-on-the-Green in Chiswick. It features five wrought iron lattice sections and carries both London Overground trains between Richmond and Stratford, plus District Line services from Richmond to Upminster.
The bridge opened in 1869 as part of the London and South Western Railway extension from Acton Junction to Richmond. It was constructed by the engineering firm Brassey & Ogilvie and represented a key expansion of the railway network in this part of London.
The structure was listed as Grade II in 1983, reflecting its role as a monument to Victorian railway engineering. For over 150 years, it has served as a daily passage for commuters and remains a recognizable landmark in the Thames valley landscape.
The bridge is viewable from the riverside footpath and from both banks of the river. For the best views, walking along the Thames Path or the surrounding towpaths offers opportunities to see the structure from different angles throughout the day.
Beneath the north arch sits the Strand on the Green Sailing Club, which has occupied this space since 1964. This hidden boathouse is often invisible to passersby but reveals how the bridge's underside serves the local water sports community.
