Aller and Beer Woods

Aller and Beer Woods is a protected woodland in Somerset that spreads across a west-facing slope. The site covers about 57 hectares and contains a range of plant species while offering views across the surrounding moorland.

The woodland was designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1952 in recognition of its ecological value. It was managed through traditional coppice methods across several centuries, which shaped how the vegetation grew.

The preservation of this woodland reflects British commitment to maintaining natural heritage sites through scientific research and environmental protection measures.

The woods lie about 3.5 kilometers northwest of Langport and can be reached from the A372 road. Access from this road makes visiting straightforward.

The woodland is home to rare plant species including purple gromwell, a threatened plant found in Britain. This species and other uncommon plants make the site valuable for botanical research.
