Ascreavie, Country house in Angus, Scotland

Ascreavie is a 19th-century country house located north of Kirkton of Kingoldrum that blends traditional Scottish architecture with extensive grounds. The estate features walking paths through gardens where unusual plants from distant mountainous regions thrive.

The estate was sold in 1540 by Arbroath Abbey to James Ogilvy of Cookston, beginning the Ogilvy family's long relationship with the property. The family maintained control of the land across many generations.

The grandfather of author J.M. Barrie, Alexander Ogilvy, was born at Over Ascreavie in 1788, linking the property to Scottish literary history. This family connection remains part of the local story that gives the place its character.

The grounds are best explored on foot, as walking paths wind through the gardens with varying terrain. Wear sturdy shoes and check the weather beforehand, since Scottish conditions can change quickly.

Major George Sherriff, who acquired the property in 1949, brought rare plants from his Himalayan journeys and created a botanical collection of international importance. The gardens now hold thousands of rhododendron varieties and other mountain species rarely seen in Scotland.
