Inverquharity Castle

Inverquharity Castle, Medieval tower house in Kirriemuir, Scotland.

Inverquharity Castle is a medieval stone tower in Kirriemuir with four stories and thick walls built for defense. The structure has an L-shaped layout and stands near the River South Esk.

Alexander Ogilvie built the original rectangular tower in 1440, which later became caught up in regional conflicts. These disputes connect to the Battle of Arbroath.

The castle preserves its original 15th-century iron gate, called a yett, which shows how medieval Scottish people built their defenses. These details reveal much about the construction methods and safety measures of that time.

The castle functions as a private residence and can only be visited by pre-arranged appointment for historical research. Visitors should contact ahead and expect limited visiting windows.

The building sits on a raised platform with a steep northeastern slope dropping toward the river, which provided natural defensive advantages. This location made extra fortifications less necessary.
