Kinnordy House

Kinnordy House, Category B listed building in Kirriemuir, United Kingdom.

Kinnordy House is a three-story country residence with towers and turrets near Kirriemuir in Angus. The building incorporates an 18th-century wing with stables and is surrounded by a walled garden featuring historical elements such as a sundial and a gate.

The house was built in the 1680s after a nearby castle fell out of use, establishing the original foundation of the property. Extensive renovations in the 1880s transformed the structure and gave it the form visitors see today.

The house holds meaning for the scientific community due to its association with leading naturalists of the era. These connections reflect the intellectual pursuits that shaped the property's identity during the 1800s.

The property is open to visitors and contains areas to explore, including the garden and outbuildings. It helps to wear comfortable shoes and allow time to walk through the different parts of the grounds.

The walled garden was built in a distinctive parallelogram shape by a group called the Nameless Highlanders following the 1745 Jacobite rising. This unusual geometric design sets it apart from typical garden layouts of the period.
