Ash Island, River island in Thames, United Kingdom.

Ash Island is a wooded river island in the Thames, near Molesey in Surrey, with a private boatyard on its grounds. It sits in a section of the river managed by weirs, positioned between Hampton and Molesey.

The island appears on maps of this stretch of the Thames going back centuries and was long connected to the activity around nearby Hampton Court, which shaped much of the river's use from the 16th century onward. Weirs were gradually built in this section to control water levels and make navigation safer for passing boats.

Ash Island is densely wooded and sits apart from the developed riverbanks, giving it a noticeably wild look compared to its surroundings. From the shore, visitors can see the thick canopy that separates it from the rest of the river.

The island is private and cannot be visited, but it is clearly visible from the footpaths along both banks of the Thames in this area. These paths are part of the wider Thames Path and are easy to walk along.

Despite its low profile today, the boatyard on the island has been in operation for a long time and is still active. The nearby weir produces an audible sound that canoeists and rowers navigating this stretch of the river use as a reference point.
