Church of St Nicholas, Burnage, Modernist church in Burnage, England
The Church of St Nicholas is a modern church building made of brick with high sculptural forms and vertical and horizontal grooves in its exterior walls. The structure combines functional design with artistic surface elements.
The building was constructed in the early 1930s from a design by architect N.F. Cachemaille-Day. It represented an important example of modern church architecture in England at that time.
The interior displays bare walls and clear windows, while the ceiling features a pattern of blue, red, and gold coffers that creates visual interest. These colored ceiling elements stand out against the simple wall surfaces.
Visitors can reach the church through level entrances and find parking spaces within walking distance of about 250 meters nearby. Secure bicycle storage facilities are also available.
A glass circular meeting room was added at first floor level during renovation work from 2001 to 2003. This suspended element demonstrates creative use of the existing space.
