Chesters estate, Category A listed country house in Ancrum, Scotland.

Chesters is a country house in classical style set within a large rural estate along a Scottish river valley. The building features a central main block with flanking pavilions and is surrounded by working buildings, including a substantial stable complex and formal gardens enclosed by walls.

An official returning from India bought the land in 1787 and commissioned a local architect to design a new house a few years later. The building was completed in the early 1790s and has remained part of the rural landscape ever since.

The estate reflects how wealthy landowners valued classical design and careful planning, with rooms that flow naturally from one to another. The walled garden and stable courtyard show how families wanted their homes to function as complete rural centers.

The estate sits away from nearby towns, so visitors should plan to spend enough time to see everything properly. The grounds spread across a large area, so wearing comfortable walking shoes helps when exploring the different parts of the property.

A small brewery operates on the estate, producing beer using traditional methods that visitors can learn about. Those staying overnight can rest in canvas tents fitted with real beds and private heated bath facilities, blending rustic charm with modern comfort.
