Church of Our Lady & St Alphege, Bath, Roman Catholic church in Oldfield Park, Bath, England.
The Church of Our Lady & St Alphege is a Roman Catholic church in Oldfield Park with a striking three-arched loggia featuring Byzantine columns. The building uses Bath Stone for its walls and Lombardy roof tiles for the cover.
The building was designed and constructed between 1927 and 1929 by the renowned architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. It received Grade II* listed status in 1975, recognizing its architectural significance.
The interior displays carved columns with figurative scenes of the Virgin Mary and St Alphege, created by William Drinkwater Gough with careful detail. These works reflect the religious devotion and skilled craftsmanship of the period.
The main areas are accessible at ground level, making it easy to enter and move around. Visitors who arrive by car or bike will find parking and bicycle storage available nearby.
The design draws inspiration from the Early Christian basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome, although a planned bell tower was never constructed. This gap between intended design and final form reveals how the building adapted its original vision.
