Hafodunos, Gothic Revival country house in Llangernyw, Wales.
Hafodunos is a two-story red brick country house in Llangernyw, Wales, with stone trim, a prominent entrance tower, and several conservatories. The building spreads across the landscape and displays the Gothic Revival features typical of its design period.
The house was built between 1861 and 1866 by architect George Gilbert Scott for Henry Robertson Sandbach, replacing an earlier structure from 1674. This new creation represented a major transformation of the estate during the 19th century.
The house once housed decorative plaster reliefs crafted by sculptor John Gibson, reflecting his close relationship with the Sandbach family who lived here. These works shaped the interior character and reveal the artistic tastes of its former residents.
Access is limited due to ongoing restoration work, so checking ahead before visiting is wise. The property sits surrounded by countryside and is best reached by private transport.
The building stands as the only known example of George Gilbert Scott's domestic architecture in Wales, making it a rare work by this celebrated architect. This rarity makes it particularly noteworthy for those interested in architectural design and his style.
