Llangernyw Yew, Ancient yew tree in Llangernyw, Wales
The Llangernyw Yew is a tree several thousand years old in Llangernyw, Wales. Its circumference reaches 10.75 meters (35 feet), and it now consists of several large trunk sections that all emerged from the same original root system.
Scientists estimate that the tree began growing 4,000 to 5,000 years ago during the Bronze Age. The church of St Digain was built on the site many centuries later.
The tree grows in the churchyard of St Digain and creates a living link between worshippers and the millennia before them. Visitors often notice the quiet strength radiating from its trunk and the way it towers over the old stonework of the church.
The tree stands freely accessible in the churchyard beside the building. A plaque on site explains its estimated age and features.
Two upright stones with etched primitive crosses sit near the trunk. They show how pagan customs and early Christian rites met at this site.
