Metheringham Windmill

Metheringham Windmill is a six-story brick tower mill in Lincolnshire featuring a white ogee cap and fantail mechanism. The structure displays traditional brickwork construction and stands as a landmark in the surrounding countryside.

Built in 1867, the mill operated with six Sutton Patent sails and four pairs of millstones. It processed grain for local use until ceasing operations in 1930.

The mill represents a period when wind power was essential for processing grain across British farming communities. Its presence shows how mills were central to local life and economy.

The mill is currently closed to visitors and can only be viewed from the exterior. It is best approached from a distance to observe its structure and architectural features clearly.

During its working life, the mill was adapted from six sails to three sails, an unusual change in English milling history. This alteration improved balance and efficiency in grain processing operations.
