Red Castle, Angus

Red Castle is a sandstone fortress ruin near Lunan Bay featuring a rectangular tower and sections of wall that still stand above the surrounding landscape. The structure demonstrates medieval construction techniques using locally quarried stone.

King William the Lion founded this coastal fortress between 1165 and 1214 to defend the Scottish shore against raids. The site remained a military strongpoint for generations before being gradually abandoned.

The red sandstone structure served as a residence for different Scottish noble families, whose succession reflected the political shifts of the medieval region. Today the ruins remind visitors of how power changed hands among local lords.

Direct access to the ruins is unsafe due to structural deterioration, so visitors should view the remains from a distance and tread carefully around the site. The location sits in open countryside accessible in most weather, though sturdy footwear helps when walking the surrounding area.

The fortress contained a prison chamber carved directly into the bedrock beneath the structure, revealing practical medieval security measures. This underground chamber demonstrates how rulers used the natural landscape as part of their defenses.
